A Conversation with Agri Pro Founder HUGH EDWARD GRAY

WHEN WAS YOUR COMPANY FOUNDED?

The business was founded in 1992 and operated under the name AGRI PAK CORPORATION.

The years went by and born from a merger of: Agri Pak; Transparent Packaging and Precision Plastics, Agri & Industrial Packaging Limited was incorporated on April 12, 2002.

Being a manufacturing plant that uses energy to convert our raw materials into finished products, we operate at nights and on weekends. Absolutely – Innovative – Plastics

WHY DID YOU START THIS SPECIFIC BUSINESS?

Having travelled overseas, and attended trade shows in the flexible plastic packaging industry; it opened my eyes to the need for a local manufacturer in Jamaica. As a loyal Jamaican, I also saw it as an opportunity to provide meaningful employment to Jamaicans from “all walks of life”, especially those who are hearing and speech impaired.

WHAT ARE YOUR PROUDEST MOMENTS IN OPERATIONS?

Quite a few proud moments spring to my mind. But, I would have to narrow them down to:

Assisting local entrepreneurs in setting up businesses in the bakery supplies sector, and then to see them today, some thirty years later, still doing business with Agri & Industrial Packaging Limited.

Occasions where fellow local manufacturers who are customers of AIP openly acknowledge their appreciation for the products and services which Agri & Industrial Packaging Limited offers.

Occasions where the Production Team at Agri & Industrial Packaging Limited exceed our customers’ expectations in terms of manufacturing and delivering their orders during extenuating circumstances such as after hurricanes.

My list of proudest moments would not be complete without noting the deep sense of corporate responsibility which I uphold through employing persons from the Lyndhurst Road community. Many of them males, who literally had their lives transformed, simply because of the continued employment which Agri & Industrial Packaging Limited provides. This list also includes the hiring of males and females who are hearing and speech impaired.

I am proud simply to be able to keep over seventy five (75) persons employed, with twenty percent (20%) serving upwards of ten (10) years with Agri & Industrial Packaging Limited. After all of the above, I do believe that my proudest moment came when I was experiencing my darkest days at the Company, when the Organisation was “finsaced” and went into receivership.

I was driving and pondering my next move, when I heard on the radio the plight of a woman who was destitute and in need of dire help. She lived in Montego Bay – if one could actually refer to subhuman conditions as living. I drove down to Montego Bay, and went in search of this woman. She had no legs; She did not have a roof over her head. I decided to jump right in and build her a home – thinking that I would have received the support of a few business owners who operated in the area, at the time. Well to my disbelief, such support was not forthcoming.

I quickly realised that I had to take this project on single-handedly… and to work I went. Not only did I, while experiencing my own “finsac pains”, built her a house but also constructed a ramp on which she could access her home with the use of a wheelchair.

Words cannot express how proud I felt and have continued to feel, even over two decades later. To this day, I am convinced that it must have been that act (and I really don’t want to say kindness, because, believe me I can’t recall ever feeling so moved about helping another human being – a total stranger!) which brought me out of the bondage and shackles of “finsac”. I learnt that after many years, she passed away…God Bless Her Soul.
