Javon Francis reinvents himself as the ‘Transporter’
Having propelled Jamaica to yet another silver medal with a sterling display in the 4x400m relay, Javon Francis now wants to change his moniker from “Donkey Man” to the “Transporter”.
“A lot of people call me Donkey Man, but it’s not a good name for my sport. Suppose someone out there wants to offer me a sponsor, they wouldn’t want someone named Donkey Man,” Francis told the Jamaica Observer in Miami, en route to Jamaica from the Rio Olympic Games.
“I am looking on marketing, my new name is the Transporter”, he said with his usual wide smile.
“When you say ‘Transporter’, you get the feeling like you want to transport your business. It can relate to me just like how I run the 4×4. That’s what I am looking for,” said the former Calabar High star.
Francis, 21, produced another scintillating anchor leg run that took Jamaica from fourth spot to second behind a fantastic 43.78 relay split. It was the fourth fastest of the championship.
In 2013 at the Moscow World Championship, Francis delivered a 44.00 second split that landed Jamaica a silver medal from fifth spot.
“I like to run relays from ever since at basic school. Relay is one of my favourite races and I give my all to that,” he explained.
Francis made it to the semi-final of the 400m event before he was eliminated following his 44.96 run which was good enough for only fifth spot. It was a tough race won by Kirani James of Grenada in 44.02 ahead of American Lashawn Merritt with 44.21 seconds.
However, he teamed up with Pete Mathews, Nathon Allen and Fitzroy Dunkley for silver medal in a season’s best 2:58.16 minutes. The Americans won in 2:57.30.
Last year at the Beijing World Championships, Francis clocked a stunning 43.52 seconds on anchor, but Jamaica finished fourth and was edged by Great Britain and missed a medal.
“The Beijing one I get a lot of bash, saying I went out too hard and a lot of negative things. A lot of people doubted me from last year, but all of my fans stick beside me and always encourage me, and all who are ‘waggonists’, just big up themselves same way,” said Francis.
“But now I am an Olympian silver medallist and it is such a great feeling. I am trying to go for all the medals in Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games. I want to have all medals in those events,” he added.
“I am just going to work on it and get everything right. I want to get the same compassion that I have for the 4×4 and transform it over to the 400m. So I will be working on that,” Francis reiterated.
