Sheba banks on new single
FEMALE dancehall deejay Sheba is upbeat about her latest single Don’t Take It Out.
Released earlier this month and produced by Studio Vibes Entertainment, the single also features the vocals of incarcerated deejay Vybz Kartel.
She said Don’t Take It Out was recorded years ago, but the producers now saw it as as fitting time for its release.
“I have had a good run from other collaborations with Vybz Kartel in the past and I am hoping that I will have an even better success with this one. I want it to be a major crossover single which will send me to the spotlight and give me a few tours and so on,” she told the
Jamaica Observer.
“There is a time for everything and after discussions with the producer, we thought now was a perfect timing. I have already been to a few countries outside of Jamaica so I got a chance to widen my fan base, so now is a good time and I do believe the song will do well,” she continued.
Sheba — whose given name is Tasheba Campbell — grew up in the March Pen Road area of Spanish Town, St Catherine.
The 29-year-old said she developed a passion for deejaying while attending Spanish Town Comprehensive High School. In 2009, using the stage name Mother Pepper, she placed in the top 10 of the televised dancehall showdown Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall competition.
After making a ‘counteraction’ to Vybz Kartel’s Completely in the summer of 2009, a friend introduced her to the deejay. She became part of his Portmore Empire.
After a name change, she made and her mentor topped the charts with songs including Like Christmas, Gaza Man Mi Name, and You and Him. She is also known for other songs including Think Mi Nuh Kno, Money and Faithful.
Vybz Kartel is currently serving a life sentence for murder.
