D’Angel’s father laid to rest
FEMALE dancehall deejay Michelle ‘D’Angel’ Downer was given strong support by the entertainment fraternity, who attended the recent funeral of her father, Noel Washington ‘Clive’ Downer.
At the thanksgiving service held at the Cathedral of St Jago de la Vega in Spanish Town, St Catherine, there were musical tributes from artistes Lukie D, Aiesha (Davis) and George Nooks. Rendering soul-touching performances, they provided a cushion of sorts for the grieving family.
But before yielding to his emotional challenges, brother of the deceased, Howard Downer, told the congregation music is in the DNA of his niece D’ Angel; as his father (late Milton Downer) was a member of the Cathedral choir, and her father Clive Downer, was a promising singer.
At the start of his musical tribute, singer Lukie D told the congregation that he was requested by D’ Angel to perform her father’s favourite song Nothing Can Change The Love I Have For You by Sam Cooke. After Aiesha’s moving rendition ofYou Rise Me Up, George Nooks’ Ride Out Your Storm, Lukie D would return on the request of D’ Angel to close the service of thanksgiving singing the Sam Cooke classic.
Although he did not perform, Beenie Man was also among the well-wishers.
At the wake, the night before, held at the Downers’ residence on Young Street in the old capital, I-Octane and Ninja Man, were among the scores of acts who came out.
Clive Downer (born December 22, 1947) died August 9, 2016 from injuries sustained after being hit by a motor vehicle on the Old Harbour main road in St Catherine.
Interment was in the Dovecot Memorial Park, St Catherine.
