What we know about the Mavado v Popcaan war of words so far
The feud is hot, and though a lot of social media users are proclaiming a 3-0 victory for the war-proven singjay Mavado, the Unruly fans are continuing to hold their own. But how did this all start?
Well, nobody really knows for sure, but we’ve tried to create a timeline of events. Controlla which previously had only been heard with a Popcaan feature, without the Unruly boss.
At the end of April this year, Canadian rapper Drake dropped his album, and a version of the song
Mr Vegas shared his views on Views and accused Drake of exploiting dancehall artistes. Popcaan defended Drake, saying that Mr Vegas should mind his own business.
Soon after Mavado and Alkaline (two of the big three in dancehall, along with Popcaan), recorded a collab called Farewell, which some fans interpreted as ‘lowkey’ calling Popcaan fake.
Afterwards Mavado released yet another song called Big League, which seemed to be innocent, but Poppy caught wind of this and poked fun at it in his single World Cup. The first line in that song is “We nuh know bout league cause a we name worl’ cup”. That was clearly directed at Mavado.
‘Vado responded in the best way he knows how, with another song. Dem Run Een was Mavado’s response, also calling out Demarco, calling him “King Kong”. The line “But me laugh, cause me nuh kill likkle children” seemed to be directed at Popcaan, given that the former Portmore Empire member has only been making music for eight years, whereas Mavado has been making music for 11.
There, the clear lyrical shots began. Dutty Dread. About a month elapsed and it seemed that the lyrical clashing had come and gone quickly. Then Mavado drops Funeral – containing clear shots at Popcaan and his friends.
Popcaan added more fuel to the fire when he dropped
Rumours began swirling that Black Ryno might also have gotten involved.
Demarco drops King Kong, as Mavado had called him out in Dem Run Een, or so he assumed? Then Black Ryno slides in to defend his ‘little brother’ Popcaan, with his single Big Bredda. Both songs fell pretty flat.
It seems as if Popcaan had been lurking in the shadows and waiting for Mavado to make his next move, because as soon as ‘Vado dropped Funeral, Poppy fired two hot diss tracks namely, Slaughter House and RPG, calling Mavado the “Jamaican Meek Mill” for taking a lengthy time to respond in RPG.
Mavado then responds the very next day with Dem Dead Already, but not before leaking a snippet of the song on his Instagram page (@Mavadogully) with the caption ‘RIP’. This seems to be the fan favourite of the lyrical battle so far, containing memorable lines about Popcaan sleeping on tile at Mavado’s house etc.
Demarco seems to really like the name ‘King Kong’ because in his new, diss track, Dem Fraid, he happily refers to himself as King Kong. He continued to play only background to the main battle however. Born Ready, intimating that even though he may be young to the game, he came ready, prepared for anything anyone could throw his way. It’s yet to be seen whether the self proclaimed ‘Gully Gad’ will respond, as most fans have proclaimed a flawless victory for Mavado.
Popcaan fired again with
However, following this feud is like watching a game of table tennis. Mavado and Popcaan are the players, and Demarco and Black Ryno are almost able to be likened to the ones who run after the ball when it goes out of bounds.
Now that you have the facts, whose side are you on? #TeamMavado or #TeamPopcaan?
