Soon after the general election in February, our new local Member of Parliament (MP) saw it fit to build a constituency office immediately adjacent to the Oracabessa Health Centre — both are on parish council lands. It is out of place and creates an unwelcome addition to the very many people who already have to wait for hours in the area. It also takes away from the limited parking space available to health centre staff.

But of more concern is the fact that the office is located in the only space available for the much-needed expansion of the health centre. Although detailed plans and funds are not yet in place, the parish council is well aware of this eventual development.

On behalf of the local community, the Oracabessa Community Development Committee wrote to the mayor on July 22, asking how permission could have been given for the MP’s office. The letter was copied to the superintendent and the local councillor. A reminder was sent on August 9. No response has yet been forthcoming, although we understand that the matter was indeed discussed in council.

It is very disappointing that our elected local body does not see fit to engage with its constituents. It is also worrying that due process for granting permission for what is clearly an anomalous development may not have been followed.
