8 schools record second straight win to start Dacosta Cup

TRINITYVILLE, St Thomas — Robert Lightbourne High School maintained their good start to the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition after edging Yallahs High 1-0 in Trinityville, St Thomas, for back-to-back wins in Zone O yesterday.

The minnows, who started playing in the competition in 2008, are off to their best start ever after upsetting St Thomas Technical in their opening game at Eastern Banana field on Saturday.

Eight schools, including former champions Godfrey Stewart and Vere Technical, won back-to-back games to get off to a fast start.

Meanwhile, former champions Clarendon College will take on Edwin Allen High in a Zone H top-of-the-table clash as the competition continues with 13 games today.

Both teams won their opening games and are tied at the top of the group with Lennon High, who lead on goal difference, but Clarendon College have had the measure of the Frankfield-based school.

Edwin Allen have only been able to get full points from Clarendon College once in the past few years, when a decision was reversed in the ISSA boardroom in the first round in 2013.

Seven other schools will also be seeking back-to-back wins today. They are Cornwall College and St James High in Zone A; Dinthill Technical in Zone K, and Glenmuir High, Garvey Maceo and Denbigh High in Zone M.

Former champions Cornwall College and St James High will be seeking back-to-back wins after victories over Anchovy High and Maldon, respectively, in their previous matches.

Cornwall College will host Irwin High on the school grounds, that was re-grassed over the summer, and will seek to extend their recent dominance over the team they have outscored 28-1 over the last four meetings.

St James are coming off a 3-0 win over Maldon on Monday and will host Anchovy High at Jarrett Park, while Green Pond and Maldon will be seeking their first win when they meet at Green Pond.

Lennon High will play away to Claude McKay in Zone H as they seek to stay on top of the table.

In Zone M, Glenmuir face Porus High, Denbigh High take on Foga Road, and Garvey Maceo meet Winston Jones High.

Also in Zone O yesterday, Paul Bogle High handed St Thomas Technical their second straight loss, winning 1-0, as they stayed tied on points with Robert Lightbourne High.

Godfrey Stewart claimed some measure of revenge as they beat Petersfield 1-0 in their Zone D top-of-the-table clash, after losing twice to the same team last season. They took sole ownership of the group with six points.

Spalding High and Holmwood Technical are tied on six points at the top of Zone G after wins over Alston High and Bellefield, respectively.

Spalding beat Alston 4-0, while Holmwood Technical were 3-0 winners, as Christiana High rebounded from their loss on Saturday to spank May Day High 7-0.

Ronaldo Thomas scored four times and David Duckworth scored three times as Vere Technical hammered Tacius Golding High 8-0 in Zone N.

Kemps Hill were 3-0 winners over Old Harbour to stay in touch with Vere on points, while Central High clipped Bustamante High 1-0.

Iona High made it two wins in a row in Zone J as they clipped St Mary Technical 1-0, while Port Antonio High beat Oracabessa 2-0 to stay at the top of Zone L.

Also in Zone C, William Knibb Memorial came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Herbert Morrison Technical who were drawing for a second straight game.

The game was played at Irwin High after the Herbert Morrison field was flooded after heavy rains on Monday.
