Lesson not learnt
Three months after Omar York was released on a charge of robbery with aggravation, he was again sentenced to prison for the same act.
York, 22, appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Friday and pleaded guilty to robbing the complainant of a 14-karat gold chain using a ratchet knife to carry out the act.
Without remorse, York boldly justified his act to Chief Parish Judge Judith Pusey.
“Yuh done know sometimes di yute dem hungry an affi eat,” he said when asked the reason for his offence.
“How many convictions do you have?” the judge asked.
“Mi did get lock up fi di same ting di other day. A May mi come out,” he admitted.
“How long did you get?” she pressed.
“Mi not even memba, a you (Judge Pusey) same one give me enuh. Mi think a two years me get an me do 16 months out of it,” he told Judge Pusey.
Arguing that his job as a construction worker is seasonal, York reasoned that he was forced to steal to feed his child.
“Mi just a try do a likkle ting fi di yutes dem eat,” he said, to which the judge responded: “You know it amazes me how when I go to Family Court I see a whole heap a women down there saying there is no support an you come now a say fi di yutes”, Judge Pusey noted.
He was again sentenced to two years in prison.
