Camperdown start with 51-29 win over Jose Marti in ISSA/Urban netball
DEFENDING champions Camperdown High defeated Jose Marti Technical High 51-29 as the 2016 Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Urban High School Leagues continued on Monday.
The Wayne Stewart-coached aggregation from East Kingston was playing their first match of the season after last Wednesday’s rained-out encounters against Campion College.
He said despite winning so convincingly, he was forced to field only six players on court, as three key players suffered from the flu.
“Both teams played well in different spells of the match, but we managed to put things together quickly and take control of the match early. Their players are not as experienced as ours,” Stewart said.
He added that his comfortable 38-21 win in the juniors was also their first game of the season.
“Majority of my junior players are playing in the under-16 age group junior league for the first time as they have all played in the under-14 competition and are quite new to it.”
Meanwhile, the Camperdown vs Jose Marti Junior League encounter saw the winners leading 9-7 at the first-quarter break, before going on to increase the margin by one to 17-14 at half-time. Camperdown dominated the third quarter in which they totally outscored Jose Marti to lead 28-15. They applied more pressure on their opponents to come out easy winners.
In the senior league match between both teams, Camperdown, playing with six players, led 16-7 at the first quarter, before taking a commanding 30-17 lead at half-time.
Camperdown’s shooters Idara McCarthy and Romana Lawrence combined well to rapidly outscore Jose Marti 42-23 at the third quarter.
