Back-rank mate
It was in laudation to the game of chess last Tuesday evening as members and supporters of the Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) attended the Jamaican Premiere of Queen of Katwe at the Palace Cineplex, Sovereign Centre, Liguanea. The not-so-typical Walt Disney film, which stars Oscar award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o and Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo, tells the inspirational story of a young girl (played by newcomer Madina Nalwanga) from the streets of Kampala, Uganda, whose world is transformed as a result of chess. Indeed, to reinforce the world of possibilities afforded by chess, the WLI extended invitations to 20 members of the Magnificent Chess Foundation as well as chess players from numerous schools across the island.
Part proceeds from the evening’s premiere will benefit the Magnificent Chess Foundation.
