HURRICANE WATCH: NWA puts teams on full alert
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The National Works Agency (NWA) says it has put its parish and regional teams on full alert in preparation for the likely impact of Hurricane Matthew.
A release from the agency today said they have been in contact with key partners, including contractors who will assist with any necessary response.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw said that the agency has mapped the island and will be paying special attention to just over 120 vulnerable locations across the country.
“These areas are vulnerable to flooding, landslides and storm surges. These roads also have major facilities such as the airports, hospitals, power stations and water facilities,” Shaw said.
Shaw said that the NWA will be having heavy equipment in strategic locations in order to make its response more efficient.
In the meantime, the NWA will later today open its Emergency Operations Centre at its Corporate Office in Kingston. The centre can be contacted through the following telephone numbers: Flow: 754 – 9094 or 968 – 0621 and Digicel: 383 – 1744 or 383 – 1743.
