Supermarket supervisor fleeces customer over $98,000
A supermarket supervisor, who pleaded guilty to fleecing a customer of more than $98,000 in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday, is to know her fate next month.
Kerry-Ann Halliman pleaded guilty to three counts of forgery and two counts of simple larceny.
The court heard that on May 16, the customer made purchases using his Scotiabank Magna card at the supermarket. On May 24, the complainant returned to the same supermarket to make another purchase when he realised that his credit card was not in his possession and figured that he may have left it at the cashier on his previous visit.
Later that same day, the complainant contacted the Scotia Customer Centre and spoke with a representative who informed him that a total of five fraudulent transactions, amounting to $98,987.22, were conducted using his Scotia Card.
On May 25, Halliman contacted the complainant and told him that she had found the bank card. Halliman further informed the complainant that her boyfriend threatened to take the card after accusing her of getting it from another man. She subsequently deposited $25,000 to the complainant’s account and promised to pay the balance in order to resolve the matter.
When Halliman appeared in court yesterday, Chief Parish Judge Judith Pusey asked her if there was any reason why she should not go to jail. Pusey subsequently ordered a social inquiry report into Halliman’s background after she failed to respond.
An October 24 sentencing date was scheduled and a fingerprint order made.
