#TrackingMatthew: Portland Disaster Committee activated
PORT ANTONIO, Portland – The Portland Disaster Committee has been activated after a Parish Council meeting on Friday as Hurricane Matthew threatens the island.
The meeting heard reports from various agencies and their level of preparedness including the National Works Agency; the National Water Commission and the police.
The meeting was addressed by West Portland Member of Parliament (MP) Daryl Vaz.
He told the committee that two trailers will be located in Buff Bay and Port Antonio respectively, with first aid items to assist residents in preparation for Hurricane Matthew.
Vaz pointed out that funds allocated to MPs [$1m] should be utilized and asked that the NWA starts drain cleaning immediately.
Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rex Swearing said the police in the parish are ready for any eventuality even as he urged residents to take the necessary precautions.
