#TrackingMatthew: JPS might shut down power plants if hurricane severe
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaica Public Service is informing the public that its power system is built to withstand and operate throughout some hurricane conditions.
However, if the conditions associated with Hurricane Matthew are severe, it may become necessary for them to shut down some or all of its power plants and transmission and distribution network.
According to a media release from the power company, the decision to turn off the power is dependent on the strength of Hurricane Matthew and the likely damage to the system.
“Every hurricane is different, so JPS has to monitor the circumstances associated with the hurricane and respond accordingly. It is therefore difficult to predict if, and when, the power is likely to be turned off,” the release said, adding that once the decision is made, the company will advise the public via the electronic media and social media.
In the meantime, JPS is urging everyone to continue their preparations and to keep safe during the hurricane.
