‘Matthew’ shifts Moses’ dates
THE threat of Hurricane Matthew threw the nation into a tailspin last weekend. Among the events rescheduled was Moses, the musical staged by Father Richard Ho Lung and Friends.
According to Ho Lung, the shows will now be staged on November 25, 26 and 27 inside the National Arena in St Andrew.
“I’m very happy that we’re able to stage Moses for persons who were unable see it last weekend due to Hurricane Matthew,” Ho Lung told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
For the hundreds who managed to see the production ahead of Sunday’s cancellation, they were not disappointed.
Over the years, Father Ho Lung and his team have developed a formula of entertaining audiences with their musicals and, in return, raising funds for those most in need in our society.
Moses tells the story of the one of the Bible’s leading figure from his birth and being raised by and Egyptian princess, to his rise as a great leader who freed his people from captivity.
For starters, the physical size and scope of these productions have always added to the larger-than-life feel. The set created by P J Stewart was both decorative and functional. The set forms to backdrop for the burning bush scene on Mount Horeb; Mount Sinai where Moses receives the tables with the Ten Commandments; Pharoah’s palace in Egypt; and the wilderness, with ease.
The music of a Ho Lung production has always been outstanding. For Moses, composer/arranger Wynton Williams’ work truly help to move the story along and enhance the enjoyment factor. Stephen Ray Johnson, who plays the adult Moses, is the heart of this year’s production. His understanding of Moses works well to bring his character to life on stage.
Technically, Moses was a sound production and scenes such as the Red Sea crossing, the rod and the serpent, the well-choreographed fight scenes, and the burning bush were definitely a hit with the audience.
It was another great year for the production and North American audiences will get a chance to see Moses at it plays at the Halton Theatre in Charlotte, North Carolina in the United States from November 4-6.
