Jamaican lads win gold at New York Open
CALABAR high-schoolers Tye McKay and Daniel Azan warmed up for the new season of the McKay Security Jamaica Taekwon-Do Association High School League by winning gold medals at the recent New York Taekwon-Do Tournament at Queens College.
Joshane Thompson, another Jamaican highschooler fighting internationally among adults, also won gold, sending signals to defending champions Calabar High School that the boys in blue from Old Hope Road will be serious contenders this season.
The McKay Security Jamaica Taekwon-Do Association High School League kicks off on October 29 during the Taekwon-Do Junior Open at the University of Technology.
McKay, now a seasoned junior on the international stage, took the fight to his gutsy American opponent in the final. Azan, a new student at Calabar, raced through his division to take gold.
The New York Taekwon-Do Tournament has grown to be one of the biggest International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) competitions in the United States, hosting upwards of 400 competitors. The tournament featured black belts, 13 years and over, using an official ITF electronic scoring system and a real-time monitor.
