GO GET IT! – Hunt for prestigious FLOW Super Cup begins today

Glittering FLOW Cup kicks off with four tantalising clashes

The draw has been settled, the teams are ready and a spectacle awaits as the third edition of the much-anticipated Inter Secondary Schools Sports Association/FLOW Super Cup Knockout competition gets under way today with four mouth-watering encounters across two venues.

The Catherine Hall Sports Complex in St James and Sabina Park in Kingston are expected to be buzzing with excitement and entertainment following the draw which pits the top teams from the Manning and daCosta Cup competitions against the unseeded teams of both competitions.

However, any number can play on the day, as the eight teams will have their eyes on the the $1-million winning prize in addition to the newly unveiled trophy in the lucrative four-week knockout competition dubbed the “Champions League of Schoolboy Football”.

Former Walker Cup champions Wolmer’s Boys, who were recently dumped from that urban Knockout competition, will meet the unseeded debutants Little London in what should be a keenly contested feature game at Sabina Park scheduled for 7:00 pm.

Besides their Walker Cup defeat, the in-form Vassell Reynolds-coached unit has been a figure of prominence this season and established themselves as a dangerous contender for all titles when they went on a flawless 10-0 run in the first round of the Manning Cup.

The Heroes’ Circle-based team has been more dynamic in attack this season and one can expect the lively frontline of Alphanso Gooden and Rivaldo English, among others, to prove menacing to their little-known Westmoreland-based opponents.

But the Super Cup consists of the best schoolboy football teams across the island, so obviously Little London possess some quality and might just spring a surprise against their more-fancied rivals.

In the curtain-raiser of the double-header at Sabina Park, Manning Cup ‘dark horses’ Excelsior High will tackle unseeded debutants in Ocho Rios High at 5:00 pm.

The Mountain View Avenue-based Excelsior secured their spot in this competition by denying reigning champions St George’s College which says a lot about their potential as dangerous opponents.

Although suffering a tough loss on penalties in their previous Walker Cup fixture, Coach Xavier Gilbert is optimistic about their chances of progressing to the next round in this lucrative tournament.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t got a chance to see Ocho Rios, but they must have been doing well in order to get here, nevertheless we are optimistic in terms of our chances in advancing to the next round.

“We are just going to give it our best and play hard, the guys are ready for it. After losing in the Walker Cup, it has made the team even stronger, and together and they are committed to the task at hand to ensure that they go as far as they can go in all other competitions,” Gilbert told journalists after the draw event at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Wednesday night.

The Catherine Hall Sports Complex will host the St Catherine derby, where Bridgeport High will oppose Dinthill Technical in the curtain-raiser at 5:00 pm, while many-time daCosta Cup champions Cornwall College will square off against Denham Town in the 7:00 pm contest.

Garnett Lawrence, head coach of Bridgeport, is expecting a competitive performance from his team against the unbeaten Dinthill Technical.

“I am expecting them to give a stern fight. We are preparing and getting refocused so we will just keep fighting,” he told the

Jamaica Observer after their Walker Cup defeat to Kingston College.

Telecommunications provider FLOW has reminded patrons that no tickets will be sold at the venues. Ticket outlets are in high-traffic destinations in Kingston, St Catherine and Montego Bay, plus ticket hubs in walking distance from each venue will provide greater access to tickets.
