Wolmer’s, STGC in Group K top clash
St George’s College (STGC) and Wolmer’s Boys’ are set to contest an early Group K top-of-the-table clash as second-round action continues in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW Manning Cup competition at Constant Spring field today.
The feature game of the group double-header is scheduled for 3:00 pm, after St Catherine and Haile Selassie lock horns in the curtain-raiser at 1:00 pm.
The many-time champions STGC, unlike their opponents who are coming off a Super Cup game on Saturday, will be rested and should bring a more competitive approach in today’s encounter, following a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Haile Selassie High on Thursday last.
St George’s College are currently in second position on three points — the same as Wolmer’s, but with an inferior goal difference. St George’s will be aiming to take over sole leadership and extending their winning streak in the march towards a quarter-final berth.
The Neville Bell-conditioned team is well known for its attacking capability, and the nippy Alex Marshall, Akiiki Jackson and Hakim Williams are expected to carry the weight in the attacking line in what should be a close affair.
Though coming off a gruelling 1-0 win over Kingston College on Saturday, Wolmer’s are well equipped with enough fire power to bounce back and continue their momentum and will only go down fighting against another North Street-based team. Like STGC, their attacking capabilities are evident, but any slight lapse in the defensive quarters could prove their undoing should the opponents get rolling.
Head coach Vassel Reynolds believes mental recuperation will be a key component for his team as they seek to maintain a high-level of competitiveness.
Wolmer’s were coming off a 3-0 win over St Catherine prior to their Super Cup victory on Saturday and they are in line to secure a third-consecutive win across all competitions today.
“This is another tough one because St George’s College is possibly one of the best ball- playing team in the competition, so we have to remain focused and we have to go back and do some recuperation but we are looking forward to it. It is very difficult to keep the momentum going because we have to be rotating the players, so hopefully we can recuperate enough heading into the game,” Reynolds stressed in a post-game interview after victory over Kingston College at Sabina Park on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the curtain- raiser should whet the appetites of those in attendance, as both Haile Selassie and St Catherine High possess some amount of quality. Both will also be seeking to bounce back from their recent defeats.
Both teams will be renewing their rivalry for a third time this season, having met twice in the first round in Group D where Haile Selassie came out group winners. With the tie evenly balanced following 1-0 results going either way in those first-round meetings, this should make for an interesting match-up between two handy teams.
