KINGSTON, Jamaica – The National Works Agency (NWA) has announced that changes will be made to Marcus Garvey Drive as they ramp up activities along the two-kilometre stretch that is now being reconstructed.

According to a press release from the agency, the changes will include an extension of the work zone, laying of the cement stabilised crushed stone base and drainage improvements.

Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw said that among the changes that will be seen, starting this weekend, is the temporary removal of a section of the concrete median between East Avenue and Fourth Avenue. This is being done to allow for the removal of the old asphalt.

He also said that the focus over the next week will be on the west-bound carriage way (towards Three Miles), which will also be lifted and the cement base laid and once the stabilised cement is properly cured, traffic will be diverted onto the newly laid base up to the Tivoli Gully.

“This will allow for the contractor to have full access to the east-bound carriage way, which will be lifted and the concrete base put down,” Shaw explained.

While the project is slated to be completed in March next year, the NWA is working to have the concrete base completed by this Christmas. Completion of the base will result in a significant reduction in the delays now being experienced in using the corridor, especially during peak periods.

Motorists are being asked to exercise patience in using the corridor and to observe the warning signs and instructions of flag persons.

They are also being advised to expect changes, while using the corridor, as the NWA pushes towards completing the road base over the next seven weeks.
