Police issue safety tips after attacks on children
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The police are reminding parents/guardians to encourage their children to always try to be safe in their day-to-day routines and have issued some tips for them to pass along, following the recent attacks on children.
The tips are below:
*Advise them to beware of strangers approaching them for any reason. Criminals may try various methods of distracting them with the intention of taking their money or belongings.
* Tell them to ensure that a relative knows where they are at all times.
* Know who their friends are and encourage them to ‘hang out’ at places you know are safe.
* Tell your child not to stop for conversations with strangers.
* Tell your child not to allow any stranger to touch him/her.
* Tell your child not to resist a robber or gunman. Your child’s life is worth more than money and material goods.
* Never assume that you will not be faced with a level of violence, intimidation, or aggression. Always be prepared and look confident at all times.
* Be familiar with your surroundings.
* Keep valuables out of sight and secured.
* Trust your instincts; if something does not feel right maybe it is not.
* Avoid confrontations – walk away.
* Be alert at all times!
* Be attentive – do not use your cell phone if it is not necessary while you are commuting.
*Walk down the middle of the pavement if the road is deserted.
* Avoid dark alleyways and isolated areas.
* Think about possible escape routes in the event that you feel threatened.
* If you believe that you are being followed, trust your instincts and take action.
* There is safety in numbers – try and walk with a friend or in a group.
* Avoid large crowds if you can.
* Keep your mind on your surroundings and try not to be distracted with your cellular phones and other gadgets.
* Always take the route you know best and try to have a way to contact someone in the event of an emergency.
* Always use the designated bus or registered taxi that you know or that is identifiable.
* Do not give out your personal details to strangers.
* Walk everywhere with a sense of purpose – show you are calm, confident and know where you are going.
