Sound system confab on Nov 11
The inaugural Sound System Summit takes place November 11 at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston.
It is part of the November 10-13 Jamaican Music Conference (JMC) at that venue.
The ‘summit’ is the brainchild of New York show promoters Irish and Chin. It will focus on the history and impact of the Jamaican sound system.
Garfield “Chin” Bourne of Irish and Chin stressed the need to recognise sound systems which have helped expose artistes and their music for over 50 years.
“These days, an extreme amount of focus is being placed on the growth of the music, with very little acknowledgement and/or emphasis on the role that the sound system culture has played and is still playing in the development and nurturing of the music’s top personalities,” he said. “I believe that JMC is an ideal platform for highlighting the sound system.”
JMC was founded in 2012 by Kwasi Osei Bonsu, Julian A Haffner, and Sigh Griffin. It is a forum for industry insiders to discuss ways to improve the dancehall/reggae product.
This year’s theme is ‘Word I Sound I Power’.
