Gaynstead, Camperdown score wins in ISSA Urban High Schools netball
DEFENDING champions Gaynstead High as well as Camperdown High continued their defence of their junior and senior league titles, respectively, as the second round of the 2016 Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Urban High Schools netball competitions got under way at the Leila Robinson Courts on Thursday.
Both teams have maintained their unbeaten runs.
Gaynstead defeated St Hugh’s High in the junior league 21-9, while Camperdown made easy work of Tivoli High with a commanding 51-17 win in the senior league.
Derrick Brown, manager of Gaynstead’s junior and senior teams, said it was a good win for both teams.
“Against St Hugh’s in the Juniors, the players had to dig very hard as our opponents are not an easy team to beat. Our defence held their own well, and we will be looking for another win against Papine on Wednesday,” Brown said.
According to Brown, the senior team played much better than he had anticipated.
Meanwhile, Wayne Stewart, coach of Camperdown High, said the win was very easy.
“Tivoli did not play badly as they are not as experienced as our team, but our players were too strong. Despite the easy win, the matches certainly will get tougher, but I will be taking each game one at a time,” Stewart said.
The Queen’s School started off with two wins over Holy Childhood and Immaculate Conception High in Junior and Senior Leagues, respectively.
The Queen’s had to work hard in beating Immaculate Conception 31-25, but hammered them 65-5 in their Senior League match-up after leading 37-3 at half time.
Excelsior High crushed Penwood High 51-8 in a Senior League encounter after securing a commanding 30-0 lead at half time.
Norman Manley High registered two wins beating Wolmer’ High School for Girls 28-10 in the Juniors and 36-30 in the Seniors, while Gaynstead defeated St Hugh’s 42-24 in the Seniors. St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) pulled off a surprise 24-22 win over Camperdown High in Junior action.
