Fire the entire FLA board!

Dear Editor,

Thanks to Professor Trevor Munroe of the National Integrity Action we are reminded that corruption is rife in Jamaica. The Firearm Licensing Authority is a recent demonstration of an agency that can be manipulated or is seemingly toothless.

It has now come to the knowledge of the Jamaican public that a file for a former accused in a gun-related death case has disappeared from the Firearms Licensing Authority (FLA). What is interesting too, coming out of allegations by the police high command, was that for five years the FLA has requested a revocation of this man license. Yet, no license was revoked.

This is a joke business.

How can well-thinking Jamaicans trust those placed in authority and given power to serve them? What about fiduciary responsibility and corporate governance? Where is there proper administration and job duties in the FLA?

Typically, a board meeting should report any item of a critical nature in its minutes. For five years the FLA minutes failed to document or take active action pertaining to a firearm holder.

The entire board of the Firearms Licensing Authority should go. In fact, it is time investigation be carried out against the board and the findings made public.

This agency cannot assure Jamaica it is competent or relevant. The Jamaican people deserve better; we do not need organisations that do not act in the best interest of the people.
