JCF to enlist serving district constables to boost numbers
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) will enlist serving district constables to boost its numbers and capacity through a modified training programme scheduled to begin in January 2017.
Minister of National Security Robert Montague, who made the recommendation, this morning welcomed the announcement.
The minister said the move is an important step in addressing the attrition rate in the JCF, and is in direct alignment with the ministry’s strategic policy pillar of achieving ‘Effective Policing’ in communities across the island.
On average, 300 members leave the JCF every year for reasons ranging from resignation to retirement, according to a release from the ministry.
“By creating an entry pathway into the JCF for District Constables, we are engaging in innovative thinking and creating space for new DCs, even as we take steps to increase the number of applicants to the Force through the standard route”, said Montague.
The ministry outlined that suitably qualified district constables seeking to enlist in the JCF must be less than 35 years old with at least two (2) years’ service in the rural police.
They must be recommended by a commanding officer and will be required to have a pass in the English Language at the GCE or CXC level and must sit a written examination.
Additionally, qualifying DCs must pass a physical fitness and medical examination. Applications close this Friday, November 11.
