UPDATE: Gov’t abandons plans to split Portmore, St Catherine municipalities

Smith made the disclosure to OBSERVER ONLINE a short while ago.
This comes in light of the People’s National Party (PNP) this morning chiding the government for its apparent sudden attempt to make fundamental changes to existing electoral structures in St Catherine.
The PNP said: “Yesterday evening the Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives, Phillip Paulwell, received notice of a Bill to be tabled and debated today in Parliament which would separate the Portmore Municipality from the St Catherine Municipality”.

The party argued that the move would prevent Councillors who sit on the Portmore Municipality from sitting on the St Catherine Municipality/Local Authority, despite Portmore being a part of the geography of St Catherine.
