NWA working to reopen blocked roadway in St Mary

ST MARY, Jamaica — The National Works Agency (NWA) says a team is now working to reopen the main road between Evondale and Iterboreale in St Mary.

The NWA said the road had been cut by floodwaters, which also left mud and debris strewn all over the affected section.

Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, in a news release Wednesday, said that residents from the communities of Tinsbury and Evondale are being seriously impacted.

He said that it continues to rain in St Mary and that the agency has recommended that classes be dismissed at the nearby Mount St Joseph’s Primary School in order to allow the children to get home safely.

In the meantime, the main road between Mahagony Vale, St Thomas and Mavis Bank in St Andrew, which was blocked last night by landslides, has been reopened.

The NWA is advising people using the corridor to exercise extreme caution as the road embankments might become unstable due to continuous rainfall.
