KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — The Ministry of Justice yesterday, signed two contracts totalling more than $43 million to undertake work aimed at improving services within the justice system.

Of the amount, $21.4 million is for the installation of Z-profile louvre blades at the Supreme Court, King Street, downtown Kingston; and $21.8 million for the procurement of a high-density filing system for the Ministry.

Addressing the signing ceremony at the ministry’s Constant Spring Road headquarters, Portfolio Minister Delroy Chuck said the installation of the louvre blades at the Supreme Court is necessary as the corridor at the facility is open to public view.

“Anyone can stay in the car park at the Supreme Court (and) see the judges moving around on the corridor. It has always been a great deal of concern to the judges, that when they move from court to their offices, anyone can see them, and indeed their security is compromised,” he said.

Tankweld Fabrication Limited has been awarded the contract to undertake the installation of the blades.

The high-density filing system will ensure that all of the documents within the ministry are properly filed and retrievable upon request. Keith Ryan and Company Limited has been awarded the contract to procure the system.

“Although we are moving towards a paperless system, ultimately, at this moment we need to be able to protect our files, not only in the courts, but here in the Ministry of Justice,” Chuck said.
