Herbert Morrison post double wins over Cornwall College

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Double defending champions Herbert Morrison Technical scored a double over Cornwall College in Monday’s ISSA/Western Conference boys’ basketball competition with easy wins at Cornwall to extend their perfect winning runs this season.

Herbert Morrison shook off a slow start to win the Under-16 game 69-40 and, despite being held below 96 points for the first time this season, won the Under-19 game 57-33.

Muschett High also won their double over Holland High 37-36 in the Under-16, and 55-38 over a grieving Spot Valley High in the Under-19 game.

Holland High lead the Under-16 section with seven points from five games; with three teams tied on six points — Herbert Morrison, Muschett High and Rhodes Hall; followed by Cornwall College and William Knibb on four points each.

Muschett High lead the Under-19 section with 12 points, followed by Cornwall College after their first loss of the season on 11; Herbert Morrison are next on a perfect 10, followed by Spot Valley High and William Knibb Memorial on six points each.

On Monday, Cornwall College got off to a fast start in the Under-16 game and led 12-0 before Herbert Morrison started their comeback and cut the deficit to four points 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The visitors then outscored Cornwall College 61-28 over the next three quarters to run out easy winners with David Gordon scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, while Kevin Smith and Davaughn Campbell both scored 12 points each.

Jowayne Jones also scored 17 points to lead Cornwall College, as Kenrick Brown added nine points.

Herbert Morrison held Cornwall College to just 13 first-half points in the Under-19 game, leading 11-9 and 23-13 after the first two quarters, as Tafari Vassell had a double-double 18 points and 16 rebounds, and Brendan Dawkins scored 15 points for the winner.

Ryan Whyte, with 10 points, was the only Cornwall College player who got double digits, while Giovanni Bailey scored eight points.

At Spot Valley, despite being held to six points in the fourth quarter, Muschett High edged Holland High by a point, 37-36, in a game that saw the lead change hands several times, thanks to a game-high 20 points from Michael Tomlinson, who also had 16 rebounds.

Muschett led 10-9 after the first quarter, but Holland took over in the second quarter and led 24-20 at half time, only for Muschett to retake the lead at the end of the fourth quarter 31-26 then held on to eke out the win by the thinnest of margins.

Shavon Wallace scored 10 points and had nine rebounds for Holland, while Owen Rodney scored eight points and had 12 rebounds.

The winless Spot Valley High, who are still mourning the sudden death of captain Saymar Ramsay, led for the first three quarters but could not prevent a big fourth quarter from Muschett, who had three players scoring in double digits.

Spot Valley held small leads after each break 10-9, 21-19 and 30-28, but Muschett exploded for 27 points in the fourth quarter while holding Spot Valley to eight points.

Shawayne Small scored 14 points to lead Muschett, Cashwayne Simms scored 12, while Clayon Rankine scored 11 points.

Roger Hines was the top scorer for Spot Valley with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Jerry Galloway scored nine points.
