Up in the lofty Blue Mountains nestled in eastern Jamaica, where daybreak must sift through the early morning mist, lies Mavis Bank, a small rural town. This is the site of Jamaica’s exalted “black gold”, the home of the Mavis Bank Coffee Factory, the domain of the world’s beloved Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee, Jablum.

The origin of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee dates back to the early 18th century when, in 1729, a few precious Arabica coffee seedlings were brought in from Hispaniola by the British Governor of Jamaica. This gave birth to the cultivation on the island, but its subsequent extraordinary growth could be attributed to the diligence of Haitian coffee growers who fled their island during the 1970 revolutions to the quiet of the Mountains to start new lives. Cultivation was bolstered by the emergence of small farmers who immediately claimed their share of the coffee trade. It became clear to those who settled in this area- the coffee berry grown in the Blue Mountains was unlike any other. The Blue Mountains slowly became the focal point of those who began to take notice of the unique qualities of the coffee produced there. Indeed, the dedicated farmers who cultivated the coffee berry boast a long lineage and connection between their families and the Mavis Bank Coffee Factory.

Established in 1923, the Mavis Bank Coffee Company has grown to become Jamaica’s largest producer of the much revered Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. Mavis Bank Coffee Factory Limited (MBCF) is also Jamaica’s only fully integrated Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee facility. MBCF processes over 1 million pounds of green beans from approximately 6000 farmers per year.

While the factory may have grown in size over recent years, it has remained true to its origins; every single cherry is still treated with the same degree of care and patience that has ensured the quality of it’s coffee for so many years. MBCF produces its very own roasted and ground and roasted beans and has recently added a decaffeinated line to its offering under the JABLUM brand. This is the most complete 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee product line in the world.
