In-form Harbour View host MBU in marquee RSPL game
The two hottest teams currently in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) — Montego Bay United and Harbour View — clash in the marquee match-up in the late kick-off at 7:00 pm at the Compound today.
Champions Montego Bay United surged to the top of the league on 25 points on the back of four consecutive wins, while Harbour View are also on fire, winning three straight and jumping into eighth spot with 15 points.
No other team in the league is showing this kind of form, setting the stage for an epic battle. It will also be a good measuring stick for Harbour View, after their poor start to the season, to see if they can really mix it up with the best in the league — and it won’t get any better than Montego Bay United.
National striker Dino Williams, with six goals, is expected to once again lead the Montego Bay United attack with Allan Ottey, Jermaine Woozencroft, Donovan Carey, Jacomeno Barrett in goal, Ladale Richie, Jason Watson, Zvezdan Dordilovic, Fabian McCarthy, and Keniel Kirlew.
Ranique Muir, with four goals, is the top goalscorer for the “Stars of the East” and he, along with the talented John Ross Edwards, captain Nicholas Beckett, Dean-Andre Thomas, Kemar Bennett, Omar Palmer and Ross Burton, will be in search of Harbour View’s fourth-consecutive victory.
Meanwhile, second-placed the University of the West Indies (UWI) FC, on 23 points, host struggling Waterhouse FC, who are down in 10th spot on 11 points, at Mona at 3:00 pm. UWI scored a good 3-2 win over Boys’ Town last week and are bubbling with confidence to face a struggling Waterhouse outfit still trying to find their groove. UWI won the first encounter 1-0 and are fancied to repeat.
At the Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon, third-placed Humble Lion and fourth-placed Portmore United, both on 21 points, will clash in an intriguing match-up. Both teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the first round and another close game could be in store.
The improving Tivoli Gardens in fifth with 20 points travel to Barbican to play bottom team Boys’ Town on just seven points from their 12 games. The orange-clad Tivoli Gardens have won their last two games, brushing aside Reno and Humble Lion, and should be too hot for a Boys’ Town team that appears to lack confidence right now.
Former champions Arnett Gardens are still smarting from back-to-back 2-0 defeats to Montego Bay United in a couple of days, and it will be interesting to see how they respond against FC Reno at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Arnett Gardens have slipped down the table to sixth with 18 points, while FC Reno are just behind in seventh on 16 points and are looking to leapfrog them for that final play-off spot.
The final match-up pits the two promoted teams — Maverley/Hughenden and Jamalco FC against each other at Constant Spring field. Both started the season fairly well but faded badly, with Maverley down in ninth on 13 points and Jamalco in 11th on 10 points. The Clarendon-based Jamalco, who won three of their first four games, have lost their last five games and dropped into the relegation zone rather quickly. They will be hoping to climb back out and having already defeated Maverley 3-2 in the first round, they should be quietly confident of repeating.
But Maverley are coming off a good 1-0 win over Portmore United for just their second win, after triumphing on the opening day, and will be looking for revenge.
