KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) – The government plans to establish a security polytechnic institution, which will enable security personnel to earn certification that will put them on a path for higher learning.

National Security Minister, Robert Montague, said beneficiaries will include members of the Jamaica Constabulary Fore (JCF), Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), immigration and correctional officers, and security guards. 

He said the training and certification provided will empower them to invest in their own future.

He informed that the courses offered will be accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ). 

“Every certificate will be assessed and accredited by the UCJ so that you can begin that process of getting your university degree,” Montague said. 

He was addressing the graduation ceremony for 173 new recruits of the JCF held at the National Police College in St Catherine on November 25.

Meanwhile, Montague assured the nation that the government is “pulling out all the stops” in combating crime.

“We know that there can be no social and economic growth in Jamaica, no substantial reduction in poverty or the achievement of prosperity without a significant reduction in crime,” he said.  

Montague noted that overcoming crime will require facing it with “unity and strength, discipline and dedication and partnership”. 

He reminded the public to utilise the Stay Alert application as a way of empowering themselves and supporting the work of the police.

The crime-fighting and safety software app has a panic mode which, when activated, sends an alert to the police that the user is in an emergency situation. It also facilitates reporting of incidents.

The Stay Alert application can be downloaded from the Google Play Store by smart phone.

Commissioner of Police, Dr Carl Williams, in his remarks, told the graduates that the law enforcement profession is filled with opportunities and challenges. 

He urged them not to be daunted as they carried out their work in ensuring the safety and security of Jamaicans.

“We have trained you well and you will prevail,” he said. 

Dr Williams assured that he will work alongside them to transform the 150-year-old police force into an institution of which all Jamaicans can be proud.

During the graduation ceremony, Constable Kardine Dunkley was presented with the award for best all round performance, while Constable Robert Brown was awarded for obtaining the highest marks. 

The award for best leadership qualities went to Constable Keevaughn Garcia.
