KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — The Police High Command is attributing the recent seizure of firearms and items used in criminal activities, in Ocho Rios, St Ann, to a closed-circuit television (CCTV) that was installed in the town centre.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Fitz Bailey, who is in charge of the Area 2 police, careful observation of a car transporting the items and a licensed firearm holder (who was involved), led to the confiscations.

Bailey, who was speaking on December 7 at the Islington Police Station in St Mary, said by intercepting the car in Ocho Rios, it aided the police to conduct raids in other sections of the island where stolen goods were recovered and arrests made.

ACP Bailey said while the police are utilising various means of stemming criminal activities, citizens’ participation is still needed, as many criminals hold communities hostage, but they can be released by passing information to responsible members in law enforcement.

He said constant monitoring will be done on the CCTV, which was installed at the Islington Police Station, even as he implored private entities to join in with the technology, and help in the fight against crime.

For his part, Commanding Officer for St Mary, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dwight Powell, said the parish is experiencing a 19 per cent reduction in major crimes, and they will be working for further reductions.
