Boys’ Town, Portmore end nil-all
BOYS’ Town and Portmore United played to a goalless draw in their 2016-17 Red Stripe Premier League football match at Barbican playing field yesterday.
Portmore move to 25 points from 15 games, while Boys’ Town remain at the bottom of the table with 11 points from 15 outings.
Coach Andrew Price of Boys’ Town said he was satisfied with the draw, but was hoping to get the three points.
“We created a few opportunities to score, but the players to convert them into goals. The team played much better in the second half,” Price said.
“The team defended strongly against a quality team as Portmore and showed good form, as it is a good start in the second round of the competition not to have conceded a goal in this match,” he said.
Portmore’s coach Linval Dixon said the players wasted several scoring opportunities created, especially in the first half.
“Portmore actually dominated the first half and should have scored at least two goals, as they are a good-quality team, and it was a good performance nevertheless, despite not scoring,” Dixon said.
In the first half Boys’ Town nearly took an early lead, but the ball deflected off a defender’s head and hit the crossbar. Portmore then took control by producing more attacking combinations, but were unable to find the target.
The game was evenly contested in the second half with attacking plays switching from either end. From a right flank attack Shamar Nicholson missed a close header to put Boys’ Town in the lead.
Stephen Williams of Portmore saw his hard left-footer neatly parried over the crossbar by Boys’ Town goalkeeper Leon Goffe.
Jovan East, who left the Boys’ Town defenders stranded, should have given Portmore the win. However, he moved inside the penalty box with only goalkeeper Goffe to beat and put his shot past the upright.
