Rampaging Tivoli have Harbour View in line of sight

Tivoli’s talismanic frontman Johnson leads team against struggling Harbour View

In-form Tivoli Gardens will be hunting their sixth-consecutive win when they host the struggling Harbour View in their Red Stripe Premier League game at the Edwards Seaga Sports Complex starting at 3:00 pm.

In the other games, champions Montego Bay United host The University of the West Indies (UWI); Humble Lion take on Reno; Waterhouse tackle Portmore United; Boys’ Town travel to Jamalco; and Arnett Gardens host Maverley/Hughenden.

Tivoli Gardens have brushed aside Humble Lion (1-0), Reno (2-1), Boys’ Town (4-0), Arnett Gardens (3-2) and Waterhouse (1-0), and jumped into second spot with 29 points. They are unbeaten in their last seven games, winning six times.

Harbour View, on the other hand, have lost two of their last three games and have dropped to 10th spot with 16 points and are in unfamiliar waters, hovering dangerously just above the relegation zone.

Tivoli Gardens will be boosted by the fact that they defeated Harbour View 3-0 on opening day, and with both teams apparently heading in different directions, Tivoli will start favourites.

But despite their inconsistent showings, the Stars of the East have a better head-to-head record over the years, winning 14 times to Tivoli’s 11 victories. However, that counts for nothing today as both teams will start even and a close encounter is in store.

Tivoli will again be led by the in-form Jermaine “Teddy” Johnson who has banged in six goals. Elton Thompson with five goals and Mitchily Waul with three goals have formed a potent attack that must be taken seriously.

Harbour View, for their part, are struggling for goalscoring just 12 times from 15 games, while conceding 17 times. But they are such a talented bunch that on any given day, if they can get it right, they will be dangerous. Ranique Muir, John Ross Edwards, Kemar Bennett, Dean-Andre Thomas, Captain Nicholas Beckett and Rosario Harriott will be key if Harbour View are to be successful.

Meanwhile, champions and leaders Montego Bay United host third-placed the UWI in the marquee match-up starting at 3:00 pm. Only two points separate the teams, with Montego Bay on 31 and UWI on 29. MoBay won their first encounter 1-0 and are fancied to repeat, especially playing at home.

Humble Lion, fresh from their 2-1 win over the champions, are on the hunt again, this time at Frome against a faltering Reno. Humble Lion are fourth on 25 points and will be hoping to stay in touch with the leaders.

While Reno have not won in their last four games and are in seventh with 18 points, they are falling off the pace for that final play-off spot and a win will be crucial right now, sitting four points adrift.

Last year’s beaten finalists Portmore United, currently in fifth spot with 25 points, host a Waterhouse team down in 11th spot on 11 points. Having lost four of their last five games, this game is more important for Waterhouse than Portmore United, hence the struggling team is due for a win and Waterhouse should start the recovery run now against Portmore with a victory.

Former champions Arnett Gardens will be hoping to make it two in a row when they host the promoted Maverley/Hughenden at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex at 3:00 pm. Both teams are coming off victories and it should be a keenly contested game, but the advantage must go to the home team Arnett Gardens.

Bottom-placed Boys’ Town on 11 points tackle the promoted Jamalco FC at the Wembley Centre of Excellence. Jamalco are eighth with 17 points, while Boys’ Town are six points behind and cannot afford to slip any further. It’s a crucial game for Jamalco, but a critical game for Boys’ Town.
