Foodie News – Rum cake maker Tortuga…

Rum cake maker Tortuga International Holdings Limited has commissioned into operation a 14,000 square-foot bakery at Retirement Cresent, Kingston

Chief executive officer of the company, Marcus Simmonds, says the new facility, which was officially opened last week Wednesday, will increase Tortuga’s productive capacity of rum cakes by 10 times that of its former bakery in Bogue, Montego Bay. A total of US$3.5 million has been invested in the construction of the property, which will provide employment to an additional 60 individuals.

Tortuga is known for its rum cakes, rum and other gourmet products, including rum-flavoured coffee, sauces, rum fudge, chocolate rum turtles with sea salt, and rum balls. With the expansion, the company hopes to increase exports to the USA and other Caricom countries.

Simmonds took Thursday Life on a tour of the new production facility and talked us through the baking process of the rum-glazed cake.

With the holidays fast approaching, Thursday Life suggests the celebrated rum cake as the perfect way to close Christmas dinner.
