MBU, Revelations progress in Captain’s KO
GRANVILLE, St James — Defending champions Montego Bay United (MBU) and Revelations FC made progress to the second round of the St James Football Association Captain’s Bakery and Grill Knockout, after scoring wins over Granville United and Norwood Strikers, respectively, on Thursday.
MBU edged Granville United 2-1 at Granville Community Centre in the first meeting between the clubs since Granville upset them in the final two seasons ago, while Revelations FC were 2-0 winners over Norwood at the UDC field.
Thursday’s winners will join the other qualifiers — Firehouse SC, Paradise FC, Heights FC, Club Stars, Somerton FC, Irwin FC, Wadadah FC and Catherine Hall FC.
At Granville on Thursday, Kashief Brown in the first half and substitute Yohan Weatherly in the second half gave the Premier League champions a 2-0 lead.
A goal from Oneil Pringle, with just over 15 minutes, however, made the end of the game exciting as the home team tried to rev up their attack in the hopes of at least forcing the game into extra time.
Brown forced his way between two defenders to beat goalkeeper Zahvia Hutchinson from close range, giving MBU the lead in the 26th minute.
Weatherly curled a shot from the left flank high into the top far corner of the goal in the 67th minute to double the advantage, but 10 minutes later Pringle drilled a shot past goalkeeper David Swaby to give his team hopes of a come-from-behind upset win.
Gregory Gordon failed to draw Granville United level when he got behind the MBU defence, but Swaby was equal to the task and blocked the shot.
At the other end, MBU missed a double chance late to take the game away from Granville United when Dino Williams, who was a late substitution, hit the upright with a volley and Weatherly skied the rebound.
At the UDC field, Orlando Gilpin and Kingsley Alcock both scored in the first half for Revelations FC to advance to the second round for the first time in two seasons, since the 2013-14 season.
Gilpin gave Revelations FC the lead in the 13th minute before Alcock made it 2-0 in the 2nd.
