Puerto Seco Beach to reopen in March
VENDORS in Discovery Bay, St Ann, say they are eagerly anticipating the reopening of the Puerto Seco Beach in March.
The Jamaica Observer North East understands that the first phase of the facility is expected to be completed by March and will be open to the public. The beach was previously scheduled for reopening last February after it was closed in December 2015.
“Since the beach close the town dead,” one vendor said.
“We use to push we cart go over there and when it reopen we [maybe ] can’t go over there because a new management,” another vendor said.
The Jamaica Bauxite Mining Limited (JBM) has since made a 20-year lease arrangement with Guardsman Group Limited, operators of the popular eight-acre beach.
President of the Discovery Bay Community Development Committee Lee Arbouin, said she hopes that when the beach reopens the Guardsman Group will honour its commitment to offer concessionary rates to residents of the community.
“People are not unhappy about the Puerto Seco upgrading; we are concerned about how it will affect us. “We the people in Discovery Bay welcome the fact that Puerto Seco will be reopened. However, we hope that they will honour what they say, that they will be giving concession to people living in the area,” she said.
She added that locals may not be able to afford rates that will be offered to tourists visiting what is expected to be a theme park.
