Student calls for better roads, school bus in Accompong Town
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica – At least one student of the Accompong Town Primary School in St Elizabeth is appealing to corporate Jamaica to donate a much-needed school bus to Accompong Town..
In fact, Shamoya White on Friday called on the Government to quickly address the poor roads and lack of piped water in Accompong Town.
“Transportation is very hard to get and many times we have to walk as far as 10 miles to get to school. We have to get up as early as 4:00 am to get to school on time.
“It is a good thing we are in Maroon Town – the safest place on earth – so at that hour we do not have to fear being raped, kidnapped, or killed,” she said while sharing her wish list with those in attendance at the 279th anniversary celebration of the signing of the Maroon Peace Treaty with colonial Britain.
White also argued that proper roads in her community would facilitate more visitors to the historic site, thereby resulting in economic benefits to the residents.
She asked: “I wonder if representatives from National Commercial Bank, Scotiabank, CHASE Fund, Grace, Lasco, Digicel, or [Flow] are listening?”
The student also said that the second thing on her wish list is to have water in her pipe.
“It is over 10 years we have not received water in our pipes. It is ironic as the Cockpit Country supplies over 40 per cent of water to other households in Jamaica,” she reasoned.
The Maroon Festival is a calendar event each year.
