Lady Andree scores with a nice double
Andree Powell continues to fly the female flag high in the male-dominated sport of horse racing when she rode a timely double on the nine-race programme at Caymanas Park last Saturday.
Powell, one of three female apprentice riders currently riding at the Park, was winning for the first time this season. The other female riders are Mellisa Ward and Natalie Berger, both yet to win for the season.
The 26-year-old Powell said that she was happy to with the victories as becoming a jockey is her life-long dream.
“It is a wonderful feeling to ride two winners in one race meet. I have been putting in the hard work daily and I am just grateful for the result of my dedication. I have been dreaming for this for so long, that is, to be able to visit the winners’ enclosure two times as a winner and it came true.
“I want to achieve a lot from racing. Becoming a jockey was my dream and now I am living out my dream,” Powell told The Complete Racing Guide.
The first winner for Powell came in the second race when she piloted the Gordon Lewis–owned and trained Glyder to victory over 1,000 metres straight. Glyder won by one-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Flying Machine (Hakeem Pottinger) in 1:00.3 seconds.
“It was a good run as I knew that we were going to win the race. I rode according to the instructions from the trainer very clearly and the horse just delivered,” said Powell.
Powell then completed her double in the fourth race with a come from behind win aboard Classy Aviator over 1,200 metres.
“I got a little bump at the start but I didn’t panic, I just held my composure because I knew that the horse was going to finish well in the last two furlongs,” said Powell, who received a rousing welcome from racing fans on her way back to the winners’ enclosure.
