Gaters lose again, crash to Sharpes 51-26
DEFENDING champions Clarendon Gaters’ horrible season continued when they went down 51-26 to St James Sharpes in their Berger Elite Netball League game at the Leila Robinson Courts on Tuesday night.
The loss for the Dalton Hinds-coached Gaters was their sixth from as many starts.
Both teams had an evenly contested first quarter with the Jennifer “Shaggy” Brown-coached Sharpes gaining a slim 9-8 lead at the break. Gaters fought back well and took the lead in the second quarter, but only surrendered it to Sharpes who took control before going to a 23-16 lead at the half-time break.
Sharpes, through shooters Sasha Dixon and Jodi Ffrench-Kentish, pushed the Gaters back in the third quarter from attacking plays starting with centre court players Paula Thompson and Denise Brown. At the end of the quarter Sharpes led 37-22.
For Sharpes, Dixon scored 25 goals from 32 attempts and Ffrench-Kentish got 20 goals from 33 efforts, while Kayan Cousins scored 13 goals from 19 and Deonie Gordon with eight from 12 attempts responded for Gaters.
Meanwhile, St Ann Orchids defeated the Under-21 Suns 61-34 to chalk up their sixth win from seven matches and moved to the top of the table with 18 points. They have now completed their round of matches to qualify for the semi-finals.
In the final matches of the preliminaries this evening, Manchester Spurs will face Kingston Humming Birds at 6:00 pm, while St Catherine Racers will meet Under-21 Shiners tat 7:30 pm.
