Bearer accused of using fake cheque to pay for $205 000 worth of human hair
A bearer who reportedly used a fraudulent cheque to pay for $205,000-worth of human hair was offered $150,000 bail when he appeared in court last Friday.
Sherman Grant, 46, of Beresford Street in Kingston, reportedly used a fraudulent cheque in the amount of $191,000 to pay for the goods.
The court heard that on October 7 last year, Grant ordered the hair from the complainant and then requested her bank account number to deposit the money.
Grant then reportedly deposited a cheque for $191,000 into the complainant’s account, but when the complainant went to withdraw the money she was told that the cheque had been dishonoured by the bank.
She reported the matter and Grant was arrested and charged with obtaining goods by fraud.
But Grant’s attorney Yushaine Morgan told the court that “no such thing” occurred. Instead, he said his client was asked by an individual to deposit the cheque and to pick up the goods.
“He had nothing to do with it. He is a pawn,” Morgan argued. “He had no knowledge that the cheque was fraudulent and that the person intended to obtain the goods by fraudulent means.”
Grant was subsequently offered bail by Judge Pettigrew-Collins and instructed to return to court on January 31.
