Health Authority investigates death of 3-y-o at May Pen Hospital
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA) in a news release issued yesterday, said it has carried out preliminary investigations into the case of a three-year-old child who was taken to the May Pen Hospital and died while undergoing treatment.
According to SRHA, it has been established that the child was taken by his mother to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department at 3: 50 am on January 6, 2017, with a complaint of vomiting. He was examined by a nurse and subsequently by a doctor who determined that he was well enough to return home.
The SRHA release continued: “Later that same evening his mother returned at 9:00 pm where he was re-assessed and a deterioration in his condition was observed. The team, including a paediatrician and anaesthesiologist, attempted to resuscitate the child, however, he unfortunately died.
An in-depth investigation is currently being conducted and a more comprehensive report will be shared, SRHA said.
In the meantime, the SRHA expressed its deepest sympathies to the family for their loss. The mother has been contacted and a meeting will be held on Monday, January 16 to discuss this issue, SRHA said.
