Not all ‘pentecostal’ is Pentecostal
Dear Editor,
I note with interest your headline in the Jamaica Observer of January 25, 2017, ‘Pentecostal pastor convicted for having sex with minor’.
I am asking that you check your facts as the Pastor Paul Hanniford is from the Pentecostal City Mission Church, which would come under the City Mission organisation.
He is not a Pentecostal pastor, as the Pentecostal organisation is different in their teachings and doctrine. Pentecostals believe in the oneness of Christ — baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ — while the church stated in the article believes in the trinity.
The headline should, in my opinion, state the name of the church in its entirety, as using part of the church’s name shines a light on another organisation.
While the act committed should never be condoned — and I believe that church also abhors the behaviour for which he is convicted, as God in his words is very clear about the consequences of sin — it is important that when reporting the news people are not misled.
I suggest you check out your source to verify the information as having the name “Pentecostal” as part of the church’s name does not make it Pentecostal.
