Brownie’s 100th Birthday
MANDEVILLE, Manchester – The Brownie category of the Girl Guides movement in Jamaica this year marks its 100th anniversary.
The voluntary effort of Girl Guides is to assist in the development of girls and young women, through school, church and community-based projects and activities.
Brownie Guides are typically aged 7-11.
Lauding the work of Girl Guides, Ministry of Education Youth and Information representative Courtney Berry told a national anniversary service held at the Mandeville Parish Church on January 22, that many successful women today have thrived because of mentorship.
“Many persons who have distinguished themselves in various fields of endeavour or have given outstanding service to Jamaica are indeed indebted to the Girl Guides Association and the Brownie Guides for the opportunities they have received through their involvement with these organisations,” he said.
Berry said that young girls needed strong role models and the Girl Guides Association has been a beacon of hope across Jamaica.
Custos of Manchester Sally Porteous, a product of the movement said Brownie and Girl Guides have a long and rich history.
“You are not just leaders when you grow up, you are leaders right now. Never… be ashamed or embarrassed to be who you are. Never be afraid of making the right decisions, even if you have to stand alone. Life is all about making decisions. Be strong and unwavering in your commitment to God, your commitment to country and your commitment to family and to self,” she urged.
The Girl Guides Association in Jamaica celebrated its century two years ago.
