Video: Kiss Cakes return sweet news for Jamaicans

Say the words Kiss Cakes and many Jamaicans’ eyes light up. The almost cult-like love for the cream-filled pastry is unfathomable to the uninitiated.

For at least a decade, lovers of the product, which was formerly imported from Trinidad and Tobago, had to do without it as it disappeared from local shelves.

But last week joy returned to the cakes’ loyal consumers when the the Jamaica Biscuit Company Limited announced, via its

Facebook page, that Kiss Cakes are back on Jamaican shelves and will be made locally.

The company is also spreading the sweet news via posters mounted at grocery stores.

On Tuesday, Jamaica Observer reporter Javene Skyers took to the streets of the Corporate Area and sought reactions from Jamaicans on the product’s comeback.

Junior James

It’s a good thing. I used to enjoy it as a kid. I’m happy it’s back, although I may not eat it because I’m not a kid any more. As it relates to the excitement about it being back in Jamaica, it’s just people acting like people; if something excites you, you are going to act that way. It’s a product a lot of people may have missed it, so I have no problem with it being back on the market.

Junior Evans

I am 60 years old and when I couldn’t find Kiss on the market for quite a while, I used to say what became of that cake. I used to love it so much, but now it’s back on the market I just want to introduce it to my grandchildren and so forth, so I am glad it is back on the market. My favourite cake was the chocolate one, Kiss Cake with the heart of cream. I always love that.

Kadion Wright

I had no idea it was back. I knew about it before, but in class yesterday (Monday) I heard one of my classmates talking about it and she was like, ‘Kiss Cake is back!’ And persons were asking if it tasted the same way, but I’m not as excited as some, such as my friend, would be.

Janielle Sang

I didn’t know that it was back out here but it was greatly missed. I’m 20, but I remember having it when I was 14 and my favourite was the vanilla flavour, but I like the cream in the middle most.

Natasha Greenwood

Everyone who used to eat it from back then is excited to hear its back, so of course, I used to love it. I don’t taste one as yet, but I sure know seh when mi get it, it a go shot. But I’m still looking for it and can’t find it. Even though it’s going to be produced in Jamaica, I hope it tastes the same way as back then.

Shebjorn Owen

I used to eat it a lot when I was small and use the box mek other things, so thumbs up to whoever makes it. My favourite flavour was the strawberry, but I didn’t know it was back and I haven’t been in the supermarket for a while, but I will surely go around and check to see if it’s there.

Curline Polo

I remember Kiss Cake quite well because I used to buy it a lot for my children. My children used to love it with ice cream or orange juice; they used to refuse the food when Kiss is around. I did miss it. It had a package you can just pick up and go, you don’t have to cut and wrap anything and it’s nice as a snack and dessert as well. I welcome it back on the market. The original stuff like Kiss Cake, especially older folks like me, those things we kinda miss. What we see now is inferior to those, so it would be welcome not just for me, but a lot of other persons.

Theresa Campbell

Yea, mi love Kiss Cake, and mi did feel a way when it come off the market. Mi did feel bad. Mi feel good it deh back on the market because mi daughter really love it. I’ve tried the orange one because a truck came into my community last week Monday. It was $50 for one and two dozen for a $1,000 and it sell fast and finish. My mother buy some to sell and it finish already.

Mi love cake Kiss Cake, man, especially the cream in the middle. A hole heap a dat cake mi a go buy and mi have to introduce mi daughter to it because she don’t know it. Mi love it from morning, so mi just hope it have the same taste or it even better.

Basil Taylor

I loved Hostess Cake, which later became Kiss Cake, from I was a youngster growing up. Sometime in the 80s it disappeared and it come back going into the 90s, when it come back as ‘Kiss Cake’. If it’s a Jamaican product now with the same standard as former years, then I have no problem. It was enjoyable and I particularly liked the chocolate one.

Akim Wallace

Kiss Cake is a good thing and I used to enjoy it when I was small and I didn’t know it went off the market. It’s a good move that it’s back now. If it still taste the same as back then, it should be strong competition on the market.

I wasn’t here for a long while, so I didn’t realise it was off the market till I saw a message in my family group that it’s back. Yesterday (Monday) at work I had one and my reaction was thank God; just one of nostalgia basically. My boss brought it in and I took two. It’s a bit better than before; it’s really sweet but I don’t know; it’s because I am kinda dropping sweets. I had the chocolate one and I have one more that I can’t wait to go home and have. I hope it makes a good comeback because it was really good and a lot of people missed it and are talking about it now.
