Portmore United retain ‘Happy’ Sutherland KO title
Premier League outfit Portmore defeated Frazsers Whip 4-1 to retain their St Catherine Football Association (SCFA)/“Happy” Sutherland Knockout title in an entertaining affair at Spanish Town Prison Oval on Sunday.
Portmore went ahead through an own goal in the 45th minute, and followed that with strikes by Tremaine Stewart (50th), Cleon Price (57th) and Malique Foster (83rd). Frazsers Whip got the consolation through Tevin Thomas (63rd).
Portmore technical director Lenny Hyde was elated that his team was able to keep their crown.
“It’s a great feeling to have retained this title, we respect this trophy and retaining it will give the team a good momentum going into the upcoming games of the Premier League. It was a tough game (as) Frazsers Whip came with good intentions, but we remained patient and hoped for the team to crack and then did what we came to do,” said the former Jamaica attacker.
Frazsers Whip Head Coach Daine Brown lashed his team for not seeing the game plan through.
“My team did not follow instructions in the second half (and) the late goal in the first half seems to have broken the players’ concentration and they lost focus. Portmore United is a talented team and they proved themselves. Despite all of that, the teams gave the fans a good game and I am happy with that,” he noted.
Lincoln “Happy” Sutherland, the long-serving football administrator in whose honour the tournament is played, was pleased with the outcome.
“The competition was well organised by the FA, as expected, and the venue was packed with excited fans who obviously enjoyed the game. It was a good final, it was competitive and exciting despite the score line. Congratulations to both finalists and hats off to the champions,” said the former St Catherine FA president.
Portmore had defeated Newlands 2-0 in the semi-finals, while Frazsers Whip turned back Naggo Head 2-1.
