Ziggy updates Arthur theme song
WHEN the children series Arthur premiered on US network PBS in 1996, the show’s theme song – Believe in Yourself (A Wonderful Kind of Day) – was performed by Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.
Fast-forward 21 years later, and a remake of the song featuring Marley, American rapper Chance the Rapper, and singer/musician John Batiste is making the rounds. Recently, the trio performed it on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS.
Arthur is a Canadian/American animated educational television children series created by Cookie Jar Group (formerly known as Cinar) and
WGBH for PBS. The show is set in the fictional American city of Elwood City, and revolves around the lives of eight-year-old Arthur Read, an anthropomorphic aardvark, his friends and family, and their daily interactions with each other.
The television series is based on the Arthur book series which are written and illustrated by Marc Brown.
WGBH Boston, along with Cinar (now Cookie Jar Group), began production of the animated series in 1994 and aired its first episode on September 2, 1996. Since its debut, the show has broadcast 225 30-minute-long episodes. Arthur is the longest-running children’s animated television series in North America. It averages over 10 million viewers weekly.
Marley has been associated with children’s programmes over the years. He performed in an episode of Sesame Street playing the song Set Your Piggies Free.
In 2009 Marley released the children’s album Family Time which won the Grammy for Best Musical Album for Children.
I Love You Too, a song recorded in 2013 by Marley, won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Song Children and Animation. The song was used in the Disney Channel animation 3rd & Bird.
Marley’s self-titled album is up for the Best Reggae Album Grammy at the 59th Grammy Awards scheduled for California today.
