Judge tells woman to act ladylike
A woman who broke a rear-view mirror and used it to stab a man who had reportedly intervened in a fight between her and her lover is to be sentenced on March 6.
Chrisan Hayles pleaded guilty to malicious destruction of property and unlawful wounding when she appeared in court last Thursday.
But before entering a plea of guilty, she took issue with the charge of malicious destruction of property.
“Me nuh kno ’bout dat,” Hayles said loudly when she was asked what was her plea.
“The bus driver say him never did a charge mi fi dat and mi boyfriend done did pay him fi de glass, “ she added.
Judge Pettigrew-Collins, before explaining to Hayles that police are the only ones who charge individuals and that she was in fact charged, told her to act ladylike.
“I know it’s hard for you to act like a lady, but try,” the judge said.
She then asked Hayles why she had wounded the complainant.
“Mi and mi man a fight and him come inna it a defend it,” she answered.
“Remember what I said,” the judge whispered to Hayles amidst laughter from the court.
However, Hayles continued unperturbed.
“Mi a bad gal; you a bad gal?” she turned to the complainant and asked, prompting the judge to whisper at her again.
The judge then extended her bail and asked her to return for sentencing on March 6.
“I know it might be hard for you to behave like a lady, but make some effort to act like one when you come back,” the judge asked of Hayles.
