Cornwall sprinter Brown gets better with each race
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Cornwall College’s Matthew Brown completed a full set of gold medals on Saturday when he won the Class One boys’ 100m at the County of Cornwall Athletic Association (COCAA) Digicel Western Championships at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
After setting a personal best 10.68 seconds at the preliminaries held at St Elizabeth Technical on Tuesday, Brown further lowered his lifetime best to 10.58 seconds (1.4m/s) in the final on Saturday, getting to the line ahead of Rusea’s High’s Rushane Edwards (10.63 seconds) and another Cornwall College runner, Washington Brown (10.65).
Brown, who is in his second season in Class One, said he was happy to “hold on for the victory”, explaining “the better part of my race is the first 40 metres”.
The 17-year-old upper sixth form student, who has won at every stage at Western Champs from Class Four, said he still has a lot of work to do if he was to not only make the final at the ISSA Championships later next month, but to also try and win a medal.
“My season has gone well so far, but I tend to lose my form in the last 30 metres, so if I can sustain my form at the end, I know I will run faster and do well,” Brown said.
Despite another year of eligibility at Champs, its’ unlikely Brown will be back as he has his eyes set on taking up a track and field scholarship to an American college.
He has so far scored well on the SAT exams, with 1,100 points.
