PM Holness is simply human
Dear Editor,
A letter to the editor from a Jamaica Observer reader in the February 20, 2017 edition sought to belittle the impact of the prime minister’s recent visit to a grieving family. The Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness uses an integrated approach to communicating, engaging and interacting with Jamaicans. He is dynamic in how he communicates. Indeed, along with traditional means, Holness seeks to have one-on-one and face-to-face interactions with as many Jamaicans as possible. And all would agree that his every action is watched and consumed by all who look on.
His recent visit to Shanika Gray’s relatives should not be viewed as public relations. The prime minister, like all Jamaicans, is hurt and devastated by the murders in the country. While the Government has articulated a policy directive to deal with the abuse of women and children, he will also engage families affected to offer his personal condolence. Indeed, he has visited relatives of victims of unfortunate events before. While he may not be able to do that for every family, the prime minister is aware that people are hurting and need the reassurance of the Government that their concerns and tragedy matter. Were he not to do as he has done that would be inhumane and rightly be criticised by the public.
The fact that the prime minister visits families who have faced tragedy is not something for which he seeks praise, but something he feels is his duty as a human being, a prime minister, and a concerned Jamaican.
